The Fourth Asian Symposium on Water Reuse

 1 About the Symposium

With the rapid development of economy and society, and also withthe effect of global warming and climate change, we are facing with watercrisis both locally and globally. In Asian areas, due to the rapid populationgrowth and highly active economy development, challenges to meet waterrequirements are more serious. Shortage of water resource has become abottleneck for development of society in some countries.

Water reuse is a sustainable strategy to deal with the issue ofwater resource shortage. However, many challenges are emerging with waterreuse, such as novel technology development, risk assessment and integratedmanagement policies. There are no one-size-fits-all solutions for allcountries. Therefore, it is necessary to communicate among researchers fromdifferent countries to work together with all these issues, so as to supportthe sustainable development of our common society.

Launched by Tsinghua University, Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) and Kyoto University, the scope ofthe Asian Symposium on Water Reuse (ASWR) is to provide a unique platform forlocal communication, and also broaden concepts, ideas and models for waterreuse globally. The symposium will be held once a year, and will be organizedand chaired among the three organizations in turn. The fourth symposium will beheld in Qingdao, China in 2018.

Theresearch interests in the water reuse field of Kyoto University includeevaluation and improvement of the environmental quality, and prevention andremediation of environmental pollution. Researches include the fate ofenvironmental pollutants which are emitted due to a human activity and theireffects toward the life of human being and aquatic ecosystem. In addition, thebiological assay, the management technology of pollutants, and theestablishment of recycle system of urban water are also the focuses.

KoreaInstitute of Science and Technology (KIST) was founded as the first S&Tresearch institute of Korea in 1966 and since then, it has continually played aleading role in national development and set the standards to become thenational think tank of science and technology. KIST has 7 research divisionsand 32 research centers, 2 overseas centers and global research laboratories inGermany, India, USA, France, and Italy. KIST is focusing on frontier andglobal-agenda research by concentrating on large-scale, long-term, andinterdisciplinary R&D projects, thereby strengthening its role as anational research institute.

Center forwater resource cycle (CWRC) of Green City Technology Institute (GCTI) in KISTconducts research to provide technological solutions for major environmentalchallenges involving both water quality and quantity of affected waterresources. Main research areas in CWRC are water resource management, processengineering for sustainable water cycle, application and implication ofenvironmental nano-materials, and energy saving/harvesting environmental technology.
